Heat, Smoke and Fire Danger

wildfire preparation guide book

Concord weather is hot and smoky this Labor Day weekend, with temperatures expected to hit 109 degrees on Sunday afternoon. Please take precautions to keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

The Concord Senior Center (2727 Parkside Cir.) will be open Sunday and Monday as a cooling center from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Face coverings and social distancing are required.

The air quality is unhealthy for sensitive groups (127 AQI as of 11 a.m.), and may get worse later in the day. Health officials suggest that people take precautions by staying indoors, when possible, and limiting strenuous outdoor activity or exercise.

In addition, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District officials warn that fire danger is extremely high this weekend. They ask everyone to use caution in all outdoor activities. For information on wildfire preparation and evacuation, read and heed ConFire’s Residents Guide

At the same time, power grid operators say there is going to be heavy load on the system as a result of the heat, and they ask residents to stay inside and conserve energy. They warn that rolling blackouts could be necessary if the demands for energy are too high.  For information on how to make your home more energy efficient and comfortable in warm weather, please see PG&E’s tips.

Stay safe, Concord!
