[ARCHIVED] Concord Urges Residents to Use Parks Responsibly

As springtime temperatures begin to rise and people are eager to get outside and enjoy the sunshine, Concord officials are reminding residents to follow local health orders requiring social distancing of at least six feet.

All City parks remain closed for socializing. However, people are encouraged to take walks in their neighborhoods and choose less busy times to stroll through the parks and local trails to get exercise and fresh air – both of which are advised for improved physical and mental health.

In an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, the City of Concord has closed many of its facilities in accordance with orders from County health officials. These include park playgrounds, ball fields, basketball/tennis/pickleball/bocce courts, picnic tables, restrooms, and parking lots. Diablo Creek Golf Course, the Concord Community Pool, the Concord Skate Park, and the City’s two dog parks also remain closed.

“We are encouraged to see reports that social distancing seems to be working to slow the spread of the coronavirus in California,” said Mayor Tim McGallian. “But we must remain vigilant and continue to keep our distance, wear masks when leaving our homes, and wash our hands frequently. We’re all in this together. Our adherence to these health orders impacts the entire community, so let’s all do our part!”

To help fill the void of in-person group recreation activities, the City’s Parks and Recreation staff has put together virtual recreation opportunities for residents. The new “Virtual Rec” web page is updated daily with new educational opportunities, activities to do at home, social media challenges, and tips to keep people sane during the shelter-in-place order.

City parks and facilities will remain closed through at least May 3.
