What jobs would I be assigned?

Depending on your interests and skills, there are as many as 20 different positions. As you might expect new positions are being added frequently and the existing ones are continuously changing in scope and complexity.

Would I be earning any compensation for my work?

Volunteers are not compensated. However, there are some part time positions in the police department you might be interested in applying for at some future date.

How many hours would I have to volunteer per week?

Some jobs have a requirement for as much as 8 scheduled hours per week. The Department encourages all volunteers to commit to 16 hours per month if possible. These do not have to be for a continuous period.

Since I work during the day, can I volunteer at night or on weekends?

Yes, some work can be done at times that are convenient to your schedule.

Would I wear a uniform and who would pay for it?

Uniforms are required for Volunteers in different positions, depending on the assignment. In each case the volunteer pays for the uniform and related equipment.

Will I have any formal training for the work I do?

Yes, training will be provided as needed at no cost to the volunteer.

Are any special clearances or credentials required?

All volunteers will complete an application and will have a background check performed by the department. Some departmental training is nessesary.

What are the education requirements for the work?

Every volunteer must have a high school diploma or equivalent.

Would I be working by myself, with police officers or with other volunteers?

Each position has its own specific requirement and any of these alternatives is possible.

Is there a minimum or maximum age to be a police volunteer?

The volunteer program has a minimum age of 18 and there is no maximum age.
