Cell phones

Close up photo of a cell phoneAccording to industry experts, 30 million used cellular telephones have been discarded in the U.S. Phones and phone parts, like batteries and cords, can be recycled. Old phones should not be thrown away because they contain toxic materials. There are at least four benefits in donating your old wireless phone.

  • You help the environment.
  • The phone can be converted for use in the developing world where there is no regular telephone service.
  • There are more than 50 organizations that raise funds for charity.
  • You can get a tax-deduction for your phone donation.

Collective Good is a nonprofit organization that collects used cell phones, equipment, and accessories to support a variety of charities including: American Humane Association, Children's National Medical Center, Operation Kindness, Ronald McDonald House, Sierra Club, and YWCA.

Money raised by Collective Good from cell phone donations has purchased and protected more than 978,120 sq. feet of rain forests in Latin America and the Caribbean under the Adopt an Acre program. Look for the prepaid postage label on their web site to mail without charge to Collective Good International, 4508 Bibb Blvd., Suite B-10, Tucker, GA 30084 USA. Tel: (770) 856-9021.

Sprint PCS also recycles cell phones.
