January 2010 Business Recognition Award Recipients

  1. Concord Feed
Recipient Awards This business received an award for its major sales tax generation and for longevity in the community.

Concord Feed is celebrating its 88th year as a business in Concord. The business started as Concord Ice & Fuel in 1922 in the downtown and was the general store of choice for residents in the area. Farmers, contractors and handymen came to the store for building materials, while horse and pet owners came for all of their tack and feed needs. In the 1950’s the store moved to Market Street, and in 1979, Tony Akins purchased the business and changed its name to Concord Feed & Fuel in the early 1980’s. Due to redevelopment in the late 1980’s, the business moved again and Concord Feed & Fuel opened on Clayton Road in 1992.

After many years in Pleasant Hill, Tony moved his Brickyard Building Materials business to Concord as well and opened on Bates Avenue in 2003. For the past twenty years Mr. Akins and his family have grown the business from 3 ½ employees in 1979 to 75 employees today in five locations: two in Concord, one in Pleasant Hill, Sacramento and Vacaville. 28 employees work in the two Concord stores. Concord Feed and Brickyard Building Materials are top 50 sales tax generators in the community.

  2. Quick Mount PV
Recipient Awards This business received an award for its significant business growth and innovative technology.

Quick Mount PV was founded in 2005 as a home-based business by Stuart and Claudia Wentworth. This innovative company produces all-in-one waterproof anchor brackets and flashing for attaching solar panels and solar thermal panels to new or existing roofs. The Wentworths were licensed solar installers and they were not able to find solar panel mounts that would last the entire life of the systems they were installing, so they invented their own product and started their own company. They have been called “pioneers of the solar industry” by industry partners for their inventions, and the company continues to grow in leaps and bounds.

Quick Mount PV and its innovative line of products is part of an exciting “green” industry cluster that is beginning to develop in the City of Concord. Mr. Wentworth has stated that their company is “committed to environmental sustainability through promoting renewable energy and providing long-lasting goods in the marketplace.”

When the Wentworths were looking for a community in which to expand their business, they found Concord’s convenient freeway access, BART stations, and affordability ideal for their growing industry. The company moved to 936 Detroit Avenue in early 2009, currently employs 16 people in Concord, and will be expanding again into an additional 5,000 sq. ft. space this year. Their annual revenues have nearly tripled every year since 2006, and Quick Mount PV looks forward to growing the business further in Concord.

The City of Concord appreciates these businesses and their commitment to the community.
