Kids and family dogs star in Concord Halloween Extravaganza
Concord's Todos Santos Plaza is the place to be on Sunday, Oct. 28, when the city's 22nd Annual Halloween Extravaganza takes over the park for some frightfully fun activities.
In addition to the traditional parade and costume contest, the Mayor's 5TH Annual Mongrel Mash Pooch Parade costume contest returns. There's also entertainment on the Todos Santos stage and the special guest this year is Scooby Doo.
Registration for the costume contest begins at 10:30 a.m. At noon, participants will parade around the plaza on foot for the benefit of the judges, picking up free treats as they go. Categories include babies and toddlers, kids, adults and groups. “Harry Potter” is the special category this year. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place in all five categories.
Entertainment by The Alhambra Valley Band on the Todos Santos stage follows the costume parade.
Registration for the Pooch Parade is from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Costumed dogs must be on a leash and will stroll for the judges and the audience from about 1:45 to 2 p.m. Contra Costa Times columnist Gary Bogue will be a special on-stage guest.
A K9 demonstration, featuring Concord Police Officer Heidi Stephenson and K9s Rex and Barco, will take place before the Pooch Parade.
Adding to the festivities is announcement of the winner of the Todos Santos Business Association Scarecrow Contest. Business owners in 17 shops downtown have created fanciful scarecrow displays. Store patrons have been voting for their favorites for several weeks. The scarecrow with the most votes wins the contest. One special name is then drawn from all the ballots, and that person wins a gift basket filled with merchandise and gift cards from downtown businesses.
The Halloween Extravaganza takes place rain or shine. Todos Santos Plaza is located in downtown Concord at Willow Pass Road and Grant Street. Plenty of free parking is available at two municipal garages on Salvio Street.
