City saddened by passing of Concord Councilmember Michael Chavez

Concord Mayor Mark Peterson and City Council members are saddened by the sudden passing of their colleague, Councilmember Michael Chavez, on Saturday, Aug. 4.

Chavez, a 27-year Concord resident and business owner, was elected to the City Council in November 2006. He was co-owner with his wife Vikki of Charisma Salon on Clayton Road and he supported many local community organizations.

Chavez chaired the Concord City Council Housing & Economic Development Committee and served on the Neighborhood & Community Services Committee. He represented the City on the Mt. Diablo School District Safe and Drug Free Schools Task Force, the Central County Literacy Coalition, and was the alternate to TRANSPAC (the regional transportation planning committee for central Contra Costa County). He also served on the first Board of Councilors of the Concord campus of California State University, East Bay.

Before being elected to the City Council, Chavez served on the Concord Planning Commission and chaired the Concord Parks & Recreation Commission (now the Concord Parks, Recreation & Open Space Commission).

In addition to his wife Vikki, he leaves a son, Austin, and a daughter, Dallas.
